Zi Wei Dou Shu Q: How to improve destiny? 🔮🎲🕰️
A: To improve one’s destiny, the most fundamental and all-encompassing method is to improve karma (cause and effect).
Fate is the result of accumulated karma from many lifetimes, stored within the consciousness—also known as the soul—that has reincarnated into this life. This consciousness or soul undergoes the cycle of reincarnation, carrying past connections into the present life.
In Buddhist Yogācāra (Consciousness-Only) philosophy, there are six primary consciousnesses:
Eye (sight)
Ear (hearing)
Nose (smell)
Tongue (taste)
Body (touch)
Mind (thoughts)
Beyond these, there is the seventh consciousness, manas, which functions like a conveyor belt, transferring all mental actions (thoughts, emotions, deeds) of an individual (let’s call it the soul) into the main storage—the eighth consciousness, ālaya-vijñāna, also known as the Storehouse Consciousness.
To put it simply, the Storehouse Consciousness is like a warehouse that collects everything the manas consciousness gathers from one’s thoughts and actions. When the right conditions arise, some of the stored seeds “sprout,” leading to events in one’s life.
If one wishes to experience good fortune, one must cultivate good thoughts and actions so that manas stores them in the Storehouse Consciousness.
We cannot fully know what is already stored in this warehouse. Fortunately, Zi Wei Dou Shu provides a clear view of the karmic results accumulated in this Storehouse. Since we can alter the overall quality of what is stored by continuously adding good deeds, we can ultimately change the outcome of our destiny.
Simply put, the Law of Cause and Effect is a universal law that no one can escape. When we create good causes, we will reap good results—whether sooner or later depends on when conditions align. Once a cause has been created, it cannot (or is extremely difficult to) be undone. Instead of dwelling on the past, we should focus on generating new, positive causes. The more good causes we create, the more we can improve our overall karmic outcome.
