How To Read Symmetrical Natal Charts

When two people share the same birth data, Zi Wei Dou Shu has no built-in way to distinguish them.

The symmetrical method is one solution. It assumes that twins are mirror images of each other, and adjusts the chart accordingly.

This article explains how the method works.

The Starting Point

The method begins with the elder sister’s chart.

Her birth data is: year of the Dog, tenth lunar month, seventh lunar day, Ox hour. In the standard Zi Wei Dou Shu system, this produces a chart with specific stars in specific palaces.

The younger sister has the same birth data. In a standard reading, her chart would be identical.

But the symmetrical method does not accept this. It assumes that two people born minutes apart cannot have identical fates, and adjusts the younger sister’s chart to reflect this.

The Mirror Principle

The core of the symmetrical method is the mirror principle.

In the elder sister’s chart, the Destiny palace occupies a specific position. In the younger sister’s chart, that position is taken by the elder sister’s Travel palace.

Why the Travel palace?

Because in Zi Wei Dou Shu, the Travel palace governs movement, change, and experiences away from home. The Destiny palace governs the fundamental orientation of the life.

If twins are mirror images, then what is outer for one is inner for the other. The elder sister’s external world becomes the younger sister’s internal world.

This is the logic of the symmetrical method.

Adjusting The Major Stars

Once the mirror principle is applied, the 14 major stars must be repositioned.

In the elder sister’s chart, the major stars fall in specific palaces. In the younger sister’s chart, those same stars must be moved to reflect the new palace arrangement.

This is not a random adjustment. The stars follow the palaces. If the Destiny palace shifts, the stars that occupied the old Destiny palace move to the new one.

The result is a chart in which the same stars appear, but in different palaces.

Adjusting The Transforming Stars

The four transforming stars, Hua Lu, Hua Quan, Hua Ke, and Hua Ji, are also adjusted.

In the elder sister’s chart, these stars fall in specific palaces. In the younger sister’s chart, they shift according to the new palace arrangement.

This is important because the transforming stars describe the specific ways in which a life unfolds. If they are in different palaces, the life unfolds differently.

Adjusting The Longevity Cycle

The Longevity cycle is also adjusted.

In the elder sister’s chart, the Longevity cycle begins at a certain age and follows a certain sequence. In the younger sister’s chart, the cycle shifts.

This is one of the reasons the two sisters have different life expectancies according to the charts. The elder sister’s Longevity cycle suggests a different range of potential death ages than the younger sister’s.

What Stays The Same

Not everything changes.

The 14 major stars remain in the same relative positions. If the elder sister has Tan Lang in her Destiny palace, the younger sister also has Tan Lang in her Destiny palace, though the palace may be located differently.

The four transforming stars also remain in the same relative positions.

The six ominous stars, Di Kong, Di Jie, Qing Yang, Tuo Luo, Ling Xing, and Huo Xing, remain in the same palaces.

This is why the two charts are said to share 70 percent of their content. The major elements are the same. What differs is how they are arranged and activated.

The 70 Percent And 30 Percent

The symmetrical method divides the chart into two parts.

The 70 percent that remains the same includes the 14 major stars and the four transforming stars. These describe the fundamental structure of the life: the personality, the strengths, the weaknesses, and the general conditions.

The 30 percent that differs includes the minor stars, the phase, and the major cycles. These describe how the life unfolds: the specific events, the timing, and the opportunities.

Two people with the same 70 percent but different 30 percent will have similar fundamental natures but very different life paths.

What This Reveals About Zi Wei Dou Shu

The symmetrical method reveals something important about Zi Wei Dou Shu.

The system is not deterministic. The same chart can produce different lives. What determines the outcome is not the chart itself, but how the chart is activated, and what the chart-holder does with the opportunities and challenges that arise.

This is why two sisters born ten minutes apart can have similar personalities but different fates. The chart describes the conditions. The life is what the person makes of those conditions.

Key Takeaways

  • The symmetrical method treats the elder sister’s chart as the base and adjusts the younger sister’s chart.
  • The core principle is the mirror: the elder sister’s Travel palace becomes the younger sister’s Destiny palace.
  • The 14 major stars and four transforming stars are repositioned according to the new palace arrangement.
  • The Longevity cycle and Tai Sui cycle are adjusted for each sister.
  • About 70 percent of the chart remains the same. The remaining 30 percent describes how the life unfolds.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the symmetrical method in Zi Wei Dou Shu?

It is an approach to reading twin charts in which the elder twin’s chart is treated as the base, and the younger twin’s chart is adjusted by relocating the Destiny palace and shifting the major cycles.

Why does the elder sister’s Travel palace become the younger sister’s Destiny palace?

Because twins are understood as mirror images of each other. What is outer for one becomes inner for the other.

Do the 14 major stars change in the younger sister’s chart?

No. The major stars remain the same. What changes is their position, which shifts according to the new palace arrangement.

What stays the same in both charts?

The 14 major stars, the four transforming stars, and the six ominous stars remain in the same relative positions. About 70 percent of the chart is shared.

Is the symmetrical method the only way to read twin charts?

No. It is one approach among several. Other practitioners may use different methods, or may treat the charts as identical.
